Day 1: Arrival Palermo

Arrive at Palermo Airport and pick up the car. Reach your hotel in Palermo and check in. In the afternoon take a walk and enjoy an unforgettable tour of the historic city center of Palermo. Consider exploring the breathtaking Capella Palatina, a spectacular private chapel built by the Norman King Roger II and decorated with ornate mosaics. Featuring both Arab and Byzantine influences, this chapel is one of Palermo’s most spectacular jewels. You might also take time to visit the Cathedral, a real amalgam of architectural styles, it’s believed that even before the existing cathedral was created, the site was previously home to a Roman temple, a Byzantine Basilica and later even a mosque. To complete your journey, step into the stunning La Martorana Church, known for its remarkable mosaics. Overnight in Palermo.

Day 2: Palermo – Taormina (270km – 3.5hrs)

After a tasty breakfast, drive to your next hotel in Taormina. Take some time to enjoy a walking tour of the little city. Consider exploring the town’s most captivating highlights, including the stunning Greek Theatre and the ancient Roman Odeon, where history comes to life. Take in the breathtaking views from Piazza IX Aprile and admire the beauty of the Duomo as you wander through the charming streets. To end your experience on a sweet note, indulge in the famous “granita with brioche” at one of the city’s oldest and most beloved bars. Overnight in Taormina.

Day 3: Taormina – Mt Etna – Taormina (110km – 2.2hrs)

Begin your day with a hearty breakfast before setting out on your self-guided exploration of Mount Etna. As you ascend, take in the dramatic landscapes shaped by centuries of eruptions, from ancient lava flows to more recent volcanic activity. Information boards along the trails provide insight into the region’s unique geology. For a deeper experience, consider visiting one of the visitor centers, such as the Etna Park Visitor Center in Nicolosi, where you can explore interactive exhibits about the volcano’s formation and impact on the region. If you’re up for a more adventurous trek, follow paths through the pine forests on the lower slopes.
