Perugia Italy

Perugia is the capital city of the Umbria region in central Italy, intersected by the Tiber river. The city also serves as the capital of the province of Perugia. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • Underground Perugia. The escalators from the lower city ascend through the remnants of Rocca Paolina, a fortress from the 16th century. • Porta Marzia (Marzia Gate). This is an Etruscan city gate constructed in the Third Century BC, which was later incorporated into the city walls. It is located near the ruins of the Paolina Fortress. • Fontana Maggiore. This expansive medieval fountain is situated between the cathedral and the Palazzo dei Priori. It was crafted between 1277 and 1278 by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano to commemorate Perugia's independence. • Cathedral of San Lorenzo. This cathedral has a unique design for Italian churches as its side entrance, rather than the front, faces the main square. • Palazzo dei Priori. This large Italian Gothic style building was constructed in the early 1300s. On the side facing the square, there is a griffin, the symbol of Perugia, a 14th century bronze lion, and some chains, where the keys of Siena were displayed after their victory over the Sienese in 1358.
